Truth be told, portable Bluetooth speakers are still a long way from being considered cheap. Most of the high quality ones you want to listen have a high-end pricing. However, there are products on the market, such as the JBL’s Flip 2 — a recent update to the original Flip — that not only delivers the conveniences of wireless sound with a budget-friendly pricing, but it does so with a beautifully designed gadget.
The streamlined, cylindrical design of the Flip 2 looks great. It comes in a variety of colors, such as black, red, blue, yellow and white. The speaker is covered by a colored grille that protects the two 40 mm drivers. Two high-quality rubber end-caps seal the sides, while a rubber strip on the back prevents the cylindrical speaker from rolling off your table when you lay the device horizontally. You can also stand it vertically, should you prefer it.
While one end is used strictly to connect the Flip to NFC-compatible devices, the other one is used for controls. You’ll find the power, volume, phone and Bluetooth buttons. At 6.2 x 2.5 inches and 13 ounces, the speaker is small and light enough to comfortably carry in your hand as you move it around.
Easy Setup and Use
The JBL Flip 2 pairs easily with both iOS and Android devices. To put the speaker into discovery mode, you simply press the Bluetooth button on the side of the speaker. On an Android device, you must go to Settings, and look for the speaker listed in Available Devices. For iOS, go to Settings, Bluetooth, where the JBL Flip 2 should appear under Devices. Likewise, if you have an NFC-equipped Android device, touch the speaker and the mobile device together for the fastest pairing.
When it comes to sound performance, this speaker’s boldest strong point is that it can get play really loud. With both drivers rated at 6 watts, it is one of the loudest portable Bluetooth speakers on the market. Also, it produces no sound distortion whatsoever.
The Flip 2 maintained a strong connection from as far as 25 feet away with a clear line of sight, which is on a par with most portable Bluetooth speakers. This means you can enjoy a lot more freedom of movement, thanks to the Flip.
Easy access to controls, regardless if placed horizontally or vertically.
Comes with a beautiful protection case.
Included speakerphone for taking calls.
Poor battery life, around 5 hours.
Treble sounds forced at high volume.
Speaker type: Stereo 40mm drivers
Dimensions: 7.5″ x 7.0″ x 3.0″
Product Weight: 1.5lbs
Speakerphone: built-in microphone
Overall, the JBL Flip 2 is a good value for those who don’t want to spend carelessly. While it offers excellent sound quality overall, its limited battery life makes the Flip 2 less portable as you will need to take into consideration recharging it. Still, given its many other perks, you might want to consider ignoring this one.
